FRIDAY

Meet, then sleep at 1,900 m

AFTERNOON MEET · 2 H TRANSFER · 45 MIN ON FOOT · +160 M

We meet in Marrakech on Friday afternoon and drive south into the Aït Mizane valley, then walk the last stretch up to Aremd — a working Amazigh village at 1,900 m with terraces below and Toubkal already filling the sky. Kit check, dinner, and the summit-morning briefing hour by hour. Sleeping this high tonight is the cheapest thing you can possibly do for Sunday.

  • The village of Aremd stacked up its hillside at dusk, walnut terraces below and snow on the peaks behind
  • Four walkers on the road into the Aït Mizane valley, village houses climbing the slope behind them
  • A vegetable tagine steaming on a table, three walkers sitting round it with bread and glasses
  • Walkers round a wood stove with boots off and gloves drying on the flue

SATURDAY

Aremd to the refuge

EARLY START · 10 KM ON FOOT · +1,307 M

An early start with a night at altitude already behind you. Up past the Sidi Chamharouch shrine, lunch on the trail, then the long steady pull to the refuge. You arrive in the afternoon rather than at dusk — time to rest properly, eat early, run the oxygen check and be asleep by nine.

  • Two walkers crossing a dry boulder riverbed, the snow line and high peaks directly ahead
  • The Toubkal National Park sign in Arabic, Tifinagh, French and English, snow ridges behind it
  • A line of walkers on the stony trail under cloud, snowed-in peaks closing the head of the valley
  • The stone refuge at 3,207 m sitting in old snow beneath a dark rock face
  • The refuge at night with its windows lit, under a full field of stars

SUNDAY

Summit at 4,167 m, then home

04:30 START · 13 KM ON FOOT · +960 M / −2,427 M · BACK BY EVENING

Out of the refuge in the dark, headtorches on, up the south cwm to reach the ridge for sunrise. The summit comes around eight — the whole High Atlas below you and the Sahara haze beyond. Second breakfast at the refuge, then down to Imlil for a shower and a long lunch before the drive back to Marrakech, where you arrive in the evening with a very different week behind you.

  • A group setting off across the snow by headtorch in the blue light before dawn, the refuge behind them
  • Walkers strung out along a boot-packed track up a wide snow slope under a hard blue sky
  • A group climbing a snow slope on crampons with poles, spaced out at their own pace
  • The summit party gathered under the metal pyramid at 4,167 m
  • The graffitied steel pyramid at the summit of Toubkal with two walkers beside it

Stay the extra night in Imlil

Instead of driving back on Sunday evening, sleep in Imlil and take Monday morning slowly: breakfast on the terrace, a walk down to the river, an hour of sitting still looking up at where you stood the day before. Back in Marrakech by early afternoon.

11 / Questions

Is this good for solo travellers?
It is built for them. No single supplement, a group capped at eight, and a WhatsApp group a week before so you arrive knowing names. Most enquiries we get are from people coming alone.
Do I need hiking experience?
No technical experience and no climbing. You should be comfortable walking six to eight hours on rough ground. Tell us honestly where your fitness is and we will place you in the right pace group rather than talk you up.
What if I am the slowest in the group?
Then the group walks at your pace, or we split with a second guide so it can. Half of all failed attempts on Toubkal come from groups that were never matched — ours are, deliberately.
Where and when do we meet?
Friday afternoon in Marrakech — from your riad or straight from the airport — and we drive up to Aremd together. Land any time before about 15:00 on the Friday and you are fine. You are back in Marrakech on Sunday evening, or Monday afternoon with the extension.
Why a night in Aremd first?
Because it is often the difference between summiting and turning back. Sleeping at 1,900 m starts your body adjusting a full day before the climb, and Saturday then begins rested instead of straight off a flight. Trips that skip it are cheaper to run, not better.
Can I add the Monday?
Yes, and plenty do. €60 covers a night in an Imlil guesthouse, dinner, breakfast and the Monday transfer — so instead of driving back on Sunday evening you get a slow morning under the mountain you just climbed.
Who else is in the group?
A mix of visitors and Moroccan climbers. Moroccans climb at the weekend, which is exactly when we run, so our groups are mixed by default — everywhere else the two end up in separate parties on the same trail, which always seemed like a waste.
What if the weather turns?
Your guide has the final word on summit morning. If we turn around you keep the trip, the refuge night and a free date change.
How cold is it up there?
The summit can sit near freezing at sunrise in any month and well below in winter. Valley days are warm. You dress in layers and start cold.
Can I get a private room or guide?
Private room in Imlil at no extra cost; the refuge is dorms only. A private guide for your group is €480.
